Counselees’ Rights and Responsibilities in Counseling

At the end of this first meeting you and your counselor will discuss the type of treatment that would be most helpful. You may continue to work with the same counselor that you see at the first meeting or you may be referred to another specialist depending on the requirement of the case. We may even seek external assistance in the process of counseling as our efforts are always aimed at providing the best of services to our clients.
Respect: Members of the Counseling Services staff are committed to treat all clients regardless of race, age, gender, sexual orientation, or religion, with utmost respect. Staff members demonstrate this respect by keeping appointments, by making every effort to notify you if a change in time is necessary, and by giving you their complete attention and avoiding interruptions during sessions.
Confidentiality: Since such counseling involves divulging deeply private and sensitive personal information, we owe it our valued clients that absolute confidentiality and secrecy is maintained at all levels. We are under an unqualified commitment on this aspect and respect it as the most important right of our clients
Responsibilities
Better results and speedy progress in the therapy depends on active participation and a positive approach of the client. Listed below are a few points which the clients should see as their responsibilities: involve
Promptness: Counseling generally involves 50 minutes per session. Arriving promptly for a session would help you make the most of the available time. If you are likely to be late for an appointment, kindly notify us as much in advance as you can.
Attendance: We expect our clients to honor a scheduled appointment. If an appointment is required to be cancelled or rescheduled, kindly call the Counseling Services’ receptionist as soon as possible. If you intend to discontinue counseling for any reason, kindly inform us of your decision well in advance.
If a regular appointment is missed for any reason, and a fresh appointment is sought with the same member of the staff at the same time, our Counseling Services must be contacted within two working days. In absence of a specific request from the client’s end, it may not be possible always to accommodate an appointment at the regular time slot.
- Effect of Counseling: Our clients can expect to benefit from counseling, making positive changes in their life, relationships, communication, thoughts, feelings, and/or behaviors. Very few of the clients however, may not find counseling profitable immediately as the behavioral aspects will change with passage of time only. Some of the counselees may develop a negative counseling experience too. Even the most successful counseling and therapy can, at times become uncomfortable, as we deal with emotionally difficult issues. Relationship can become positive/ negative with others depending on the situation. Counselees are advised to clarify their questions or concerns about their rights and responsibilities, the possible effects of counseling, or services being offered with the counselor/ staff member of the Counseling Services.
